Steven Lawrence Matheson

Steven Lawrence Matheson, known lovingly as Steve, was born on October 2, 1984, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and passed away on August 29, 2026, while visiting in Fort De Soto, (St. Petersburg) Florida, after a lightning strike. He lived 41 remarkable years marked by energy, purpose, loyalty, and a deep commitment to lifting others up.

Steve was the kind of man who made an impression the moment he entered a room. He carried himself with confidence, warmth, and a steady sense of encouragement that made people feel seen and capable. He believed in hard work, personal growth, and the power of showing up every day with determination. His life was not defined by ease, but by resilience, and he met each chapter with the mindset of someone who understood that greatness is built through effort, faith, and heart.

He was a proud graduate of Brigham Young University, and he carried the lessons of education into every part of his life. Steve built a respected career in sales management across health and wellness and financial services, where he led with drive, integrity, and a genuine desire to help people succeed. He understood that leadership is not about titles, but about influence, example, and the ability to inspire others to do more than they thought possible. In every professional setting, he brought intensity, optimism, and a winning spirit.

Steve’s love of sports was more than a pastime. It was part of who he was. He especially loved football and basketball, and he lived with the mindset of a competitor and a teammate. As a championship high school quarterback, he learned the value of discipline, preparation, and trust. Those lessons stayed with him throughout his life, and he became a lifelong coach in the truest sense of the word. He encouraged others to push harder, believe bigger, and keep going when the moment got difficult. He knew how to call out potential in people, and he never stopped trying to help them reach it.

Above all else, Steve was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife, Abigail Fisher Matheson, who shared in his journey with love and strength, and their four children. He is also survived by his brothers, Michael Matheson and Jakob Hatfield; his mother, Jennifer Goldstein and his stepfather, Steve Goldstein. Steve is preceded in death by his father, Larry Matheson, who passed away in 2022. Each of them knew his love in a personal and meaningful way. He was a husband who loved deeply, a son who honored his roots, a brother who stood beside his family, and a father who carried his children in his heart with unwavering pride and devotion.

Those who knew Steve will remember his voice, his laugh, his competitive fire, and his ability to turn an ordinary moment into a challenge, a lesson, or a memory worth keeping. He had a way of motivating people without even trying, because his own life was a testimony to perseverance and belief. He reminded others that success is earned, that character matters, and that the strongest people are often the ones who keep moving forward with courage and gratitude.

Steve’s life was a powerful example of living with intention. He did not simply pass through the world. He made an impact. He encouraged, coached, led, and loved with conviction. He showed others that a meaningful life is built by serving people well, embracing responsibility, and refusing to let adversity define the outcome. His legacy lives on in the people he influenced, the family he cherished, and the countless moments where his strength, service and faith gave others the confidence to keep going.

Steve also had a strong and unwavering faith in his Heavenly Father and his Savior, Jesus Christ. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his faith was an important part of who he was and how he lived his life, including his two-year service as a missionary in Baguio City, Philippines, from 2003 to 2005.

Though his time on earth ended far too soon, the mark he left behind is lasting and real. Steve Matheson’s life stands as a reminder that every day is an opportunity to lead, to love, and to rise. He will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for the spirit with which he lived. His example continues to speak: be strong, be present, be generous, and never stop believing in what is possible.

A Funeral Service will take place Saturday, September 5, at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mountain View Stake Center, 2256 N. Providence Drive, Saratoga Springs, Utah.

 Interment will take place in the Lehi City Cemetery.
