Sheldon Samuels

Sheldon “Shelly” Samuels, 87, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and educator, passed away on November 12, 2024 just two days shy of celebrating 65 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Phyllis.

Sheldon earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York where he demonstrated an unwavering dedication to his studies and a profound love for learning. Throughout his academic journey, he cultivated a deep appreciation for knowledge that he carried into his professional life. With his dedication to learning and teaching, Sheldon began his professional journey as a math teacher. However, his passion for sports led him to embrace a rewarding career as a Physical Education teacher. Sheldon's resilience and adaptability were hallmarks of his distinguished career, reflecting his lifelong commitment to fostering the physical and emotional well-being of his students.

Educated at Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, Sheldon proudly shared his memories of being part of a legendary basketball team that included Louis Gossett, Jr. An athlete from a young age, Sheldon enjoyed a myriad of sports throughout his life, including paddle ball, tennis, basketball, and golf. In his early years, he could be found playing stickball on the streets of Brooklyn. With unmatched discipline, he nurtured a rigorous exercise routine, ceaselessly honing his skills with drills that would keep him in peak form. Growing up in the vibrant atmosphere of Coney Island, he developed a lifelong love of the Brooklyn Dodgers, a team for which he would remain an ardent supporter throughout his life. His organizational skills were also legendary; he was known far and wide for his meticulous filing system. If anyone sought information or needed assistance, they would often turn to Sheldon, confident that he had just the right file at his fingertips.

Family was Sheldon's greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. The love he held for his family knew no bounds, epitomized by the cherished relationship he shared with Phyllis. Their love story began on Brighton Beach, a tale Sheldon often recounted with a twinkle in his eye, recalling how love had blossomed when he simply asked her for her phone number. Together, they built a nurturing home filled with laughter and support for their four children: Lori (married to Adam Abramowitz), Sherri (married to Isaac “Zack” Lilienfeld), Marc (married to Joanna Samuels), and Kari (married to Troy Jones). Their union also blessed them with eight adoring grandchildren - Michelle, Daniel, Rachel, Rebecca, Jacob, David, Maya, and Emil - each of whom brought immense pride and happiness to Sheldon's life.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Sheldon cherished his musical interests, finding solace and joy in the sounds of Motown. Even in his later years, he maintained a treasured list of favorite songs, often requesting beloved tunes to provide comfort and bring back fond memories.

Sheldon is predeceased by his sister, Arleen Stern, and his parents, Rose and Abraham Samuels. His legacy of loyalty, dependability, hard work, and relentless discipline will resonate through the lives of those he touched. As we remember Sheldon Samuels, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, devotion, and countless moments that inspired others. He will be profoundly missed by his family and friends, whose lives were enriched by his presence and enduring spirit.

A private burial service was held November 15th for the family. A recording of the service can be found below.
