Maria Romero Whalen Smith "Cookie" 79, passed away on May 15, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, traditions, laughter, and love.
Born in New York and later making Florida her home in the 1980s, Maria embraced life fully. She loved to dance, loved being near the water, and made friends wherever she went. Her kindness, warmth, and welcoming spirit left lasting impressions on those fortunate enough to know her.
Maria’s academic excellence was recognized early in life when she was selected as valedictorian at Bishop McDonnell High School and awarded a scholarship to Hunter College in New York City.
Maria had a wonderful sense of humor and was always quick to make someone laugh, bringing lightness and joy into everyday moments. She appreciated beauty, treasured collectibles, and surrounded herself with miniatures, keepsakes, and cherished collections gathered over the years.
Christmas held a special place in Maria's heart. Her elaborate holiday village displays transformed her home into magical winter scenes filled with tiny skating rinks, shops, glowing lights, and festive traditions. Holiday baking was another labor of love, and each Christmas season she spent countless hours making cookies to share with family and friends. Creating traditions and bringing people together brought her genuine happiness.
Above all, Maria loved her family fiercely. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Kelly, and her son, Sean, and a cherished mother-in-law to Sean’s wife, Debra. She was proud of her grandchildren, Amanda and James, and her great-grandchildren, Alivia, Izabella, and Giavanna.
Maria was a beloved sister to Arleen and Vincent, and to her brother Bill, who preceded her in death. She also shared close bonds with her sisters-in-law, Rita and the late Margo. She leaves behind nieces April and Kristin, along with great-nieces Audriana and Layla, as well as extended family and dear friends who will carry her memory forward.
Maria is also survived by her loving companion, Randy, whose love brought her comfort and companionship in recent years.
Maria met life's challenges with strength, determination, and a spirit that remained uniquely her own. She will be remembered for her kindness, humor, resilience, traditions, and the warmth she brought into every room.
At Maria's request, a celebration of life will be held in the near future. Details regarding time and location will be shared with family and friends.
