Gregory Maidenberg

Gregory Maidenberg, a man whose very presence embodied the essence of strength and spirit, passed away on March 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy etched deeply in the hearts of those who knew him. Born on March 11, 1955, in Merke, Russia, Gregory’s journey was marked by resilience, a fierce loyalty to family, and a life lived with remarkable vigor.

For thirty-four years, Gregory was the steadfast butcher at JO-EL'S Kosher Deli, Market & Café in St. Petersburg, Florida, a place where his outgoing nature and kind heart became as much a celebrated staple as the meat he expertly prepared. His dedication to his craft was only rivaled by his devotion to his family — his proudest accomplishment, above all else.

A true “bad ass,” Gregory’s formidable spirit was forged not only through years behind the counter but also as a special forces soldier in the Israel Army. The skills honed in those elite ranks found unexpected and hilarious new purpose in his day-to-day life, particularly in parenting where his tactical expertise amusingly transitioned into babysitting—a feat that brought many smiles and laughter, revealing a man who was serious when needed, but full of warmth and humor.

Gregory’s zest for life was as expansive as his interests. He was an avid fisherman who found peace in nature’s quiet moments, a playful competitor with his family, an enthusiastic ice-skating spectator cheering for the New York Islanders, and a devoted follower of basketball and hockey with a soft spot for the New York Knicks. One story that captures his playful daring is when he stepped into a basketball tournament to help out when the boys were a player short—a valiant effort that, while not going as planned, only added to his legacy of turning every experience into a memorable tale.

Gregory’s family — wife Larisa, sons Michael and Benjamin (Candy), grandchildren Ethan, Eliza, Evan, Jacob, Rebecca, and Joshua, along with great-granddaughter Tinsley Rae Ernst — were the core of his heart and the joy of his days. Together, they formed a circle of love and laughter, a testament to the family man who lived with both grit and grace.

A graveside service to honor Gregory’s life will be held on April 1, 2026, at 10:30am at Chapel Hill Memorial Park, 12905 Wild Acres Rd, Largo, Florida. As we gather to say farewell, we remember a man who was not just strong in body but towering in character—a mover, a shaker, a protector, and a beloved patriarch whose legacy will endure in the stories he shaped and the lives he touched. Gregory Maidenberg’s journey may have ended, but the echoes of his extraordinary life and unfailing love will forever resonate.
