Fernando D. Borges, M.D., F.A.C.S., a distinguished urologist and beloved member of the St. Petersburg Community, passed away on December 15, 2025, at Menorah Life in St. Petersburg following a lengthy illness. He was born on February 15, 1942, in Mossoro, Rio Grande North, Brazil.
Dr. Borges was a proud graduate of Faculdade De Medicina Universidade Federal in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. His dedication to medicine led him to serve a surgical residency at the University of Ceara from 1967 to 1968, followed by internships at Harper Hospital and Grace Hospital in Detroit between 1969 and 1970. He further honed his expertise during his Urology residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, from 1970 to 1973. Dr. Borges became Board Certified in Urology on February 5, 1976, by the American Board of Urology, and he held the esteemed title of Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to the field of urology, co-authoring numerous research papers and earning many lifetime achievement awards, reflecting his unwavering commitment and impact on his specialty.
In addition to his esteemed medical career, Dr. Borges cherished the moments spent with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf, opportunities that allowed him to connect with many colleagues and friends in both sport and profession. Among his proudest accomplishments, Dr. Borges celebrated becoming an American citizen, a milestone that symbolized his deep appreciation for his new home and its opportunities.
Fernando is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Christine; his son John (Jessica) and grandson Wyatt; brothers Ricardo and Miguel Borges; sisters Carolina, Ana Maria, and Celicina Borges; mother-in-law Carole Walker; and many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
He was predeceased by his parents, Barbara and Joaquim Borges; his son Paul Borges; his brothers Francisco and Joaquim, and sister Angela.
Dr. Fernando D. Borges will be remembered not only for his medical expertise and contributions but also for his kindness, humor, and the love he instilled in his family. His legacy will continue through those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Private graveside service will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Clearwater Florida. A celebration of his amazing life is being planned for a later date. Donations in Fernando's memory would be appreciated to Menorah Life, 255 59th Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33710.
