Lory Lockerbie, Beloved Educator, Nurse and Community Pillar, Passes Away at 89

Lory Lockerbie, a cherished retired health education teacher in the Three Village Central School District, Long Island, New York, passed into Eternal Life on February 15, 2026, while vacationing with family in Florida. She succumbed to illness whose symptoms began only 36 hours before her passing.

Born on April 12, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, to Henry and Alice Olson Quayle, Lory was a woman of remarkable grace, compassion, and humor. Known for her radiant smile and infectious laughter, she was originally named Dolores Fredrikka Quayle after actress Dolores Costello and the queen of Norway. However, as a teenager, she adopted the name Lory, by which she became known.

Lory grew up in a family with deep roots in both the Irish Roman Catholic faith and a Protestant tradition, ultimately navigating the complexities of her upbringing with strength. After graduating from parochial school in Bay Ridge, she attended Fontbonne Hall Academy, where her life took a pivotal turn during her father's battle with cancer. Following his death, Lory accompanied her mother to a Baptist church, where she met D. Bruce Lockerbie, her husband of nearly 70 years. Unfortunately, her supportive actions for her widowed mother led to her expulsion from Fontbonne Hall, but she was reinstated 60 years later as an alumna in the Class of 1954.

Lory completed her education at Fort Hamilton High School and graduated from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1956, just weeks before her wedding on December 15. She and Bruce became integral members of The Stony Brook School community in 1957, where she served as both a school nurse and a maternal figure for many students over the course of 34 years. Lory notably gave birth to her daughter in the boys’ dormitory, a moment she humorously attributed to "poor planning."

Lory earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stony Brook University and joined the Three Village Schools in 1965, where she played a pivotal role on a groundbreaking health education team until her retirement in 2001. She was lauded by her colleagues and principals as a master teacher, and her influence extended into the lives of her former students, including local physicians who credited their interest in medicine to her guidance.

A consummate hostess and compassionate caregiver, Lory dedicated her time to visiting the elderly and shut - ins, embodying her belief in ministry through service. She enjoyed a rich life, taking up golf at the Nissequogue Golf Club in 1985 and co - authoring Take Heart, a reflection on her husband's recovery from medical challenges in 1990. Lory was an active member of a book club for retirees and sang in the choir and served two terms on the vestry at Caroline Episcopal Church, Setauket, New York, where a memorial service is being planned.

Lory is survived by her devoted husband, D. Bruce Lockerbie; her sons, Donald (Leila) and Kevin (Kathy); her daughter, Ellyn (Ronald); grandchildren, Trey (Ashleigh) and Caitlin (Matt); by marriage, Albert (Brittany), Jennifer and Jessica, Daniela and Viviana; and great - grandsons Rhys, Roan, and Beau. She was preceded in death by her brother, Harry Quayle; her daughter - in - law, Kimberly Lockerbie; and her granddaughter, Brittany Brayson.

As Bruce poignantly reflects, "We are sorry, but she’s in Glory, and her name is Lory."

Condolences for the family can be left in the guestbook below.
